Storm, 17, excitedly picked up his nine-week-old English bulldog puppy in Okemos, Mich. After walking into his local PetSmart store, Storm saw a red carpet leading up to the Banfield Pet Hospital where his wish-granting volunteers Merry and Ginny were standing with his new puppy, who he named Murphy.
"It's so exciting," Storm said. "I saw his little face and just smiled. There is just something about bulldogs that makes them special. I am so grateful for how amazing Make-A-Wish® is."
Doctors diagnosed Storm with synovial cell sarcoma in January 2016. Since then, he has undergone chemotherapy, radiation and multiple surgeries. His family also has a rescue dog, but Storm had been missing the family bulldog, Bubba, who passed away four years ago. Bubba was the honorary mascot for his middle school football team, the Mason Bulldogs, and a big part of his life. When trying to select his wish, Storm considered a tropical trip. Ultimately, he decided he wanted a wish that would last years and provide companionship as he continues receiving chemotherapy.
"This [wish] has been a shining moment during [his treatment] and something you can look forward to," Storm's mom, Kathleen, said. "We are so grateful to Make-A-Wish for making this wish possible for him."
Thanks to a national partnership with Banfield Pet Hospital, Murphy received his first check-up right then and was given a clean bill of health. All of his basic preventative veterinarian expenses will also be covered by Banfield Pet Hospital for one year.
As part of his wish, Storm received a PetSmart gift card from Make-A-Wish Michigan. He purchased puppy food, toys, treats, harness and more to make sure Murphy had everything he needed at his new home and in the months to come.
