Volunteer Opportunities

We depend on people like you

Volunteer opportunities, including frequency of opportunities, vary across the state.  Below are some of the more common opportunities that we offer. All new volunteers are encouraged to attend a one-hour volunteer orientation, which provide an overview of Make-A-Wish Michigan. The trainings take place from 9-10 a.m. Wish-granting training will follow for those interested in attending from 10:15 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. All volunteers must complete a volunteer application, phone interview and background check prior to attending an orientation or wish granting training. For more information on how you can get involved please email

Wish-Granting Volunteers

A wish-granting team is two trained volunteers who meet with our wish kids and their families to help capture the child's wish and enhance the wish throughout the process.  You are also asked to help coordinate shopping adventures, and either a sendoff, wish reveal or welcome home party.  Wish Granting volunteers must be 21 years of age, attend a wish-granting training, and be able to commit to at least one year of volunteering.

Special Events Volunteers

Make-A-Wish Michigan hosts five major fundraising events each year. Our special events volunteers are able to participate in these events and help us make the magic happen by staffing our registration tables, handing out T-shirts, cheering on participants or welcoming attendees.  Opportunities may also include speaking engagements, check pick-ups, representing Make-A-Wish at various activities hosted by community groups or businesses and distributing flyers or posters to promote an upcoming event.  Our signature events include:

Walk For Wishes - Southeast Michigan
Walk For Wishes - West Michigan
Wish-A-Mile Bicycle Tour
Wish Ball - Southeast Michigan
Wish Ball - West Michigan

Office Volunteers

Make-A-Wish Michigan has two offices located in Brighton and Grand Rapids.  This may include jobs such as helping with mailings, filing, answering phones, taking donations, data entry and other functions. This opportunity is only available during business hours Monday - Friday.

  • Nancy with Team Alex is our #WAMRiderOfTheWeek. This will be her seventh-year riding in WAM. As a pediatric cardiologist at Beaumont, Nancy has had many opportunities to refer patients to Make-A-Wish® Michigan and they are never far from her thoughts while she’s riding. “It is such an honor to be able to nominate a child for a wish. I get to hear their dreams and watch them come alive. To be able to help grant wishes for them by raising money and awareness has been priceless. When I am riding and it is raining buckets with lightening and gusting winds, the familiar faces of my patients and what they go through really does enter my thoughts.” When it comes to training for the full 300-mile route, Nancy has the following advice, “It is all about "saddle time". Your legs will usually "show up" but it is the tush that gives out first. Don't sweat the miles, put in the time.” Wondering what has kept her motivated after six years of participating in Wish-A-Mile? Nancy stated, “it is the inspiration of the kids that kept pushing and pushing me. Team Alex just made it such an amazing experience. You truly become family with the other riders and I have formed lasting friendships. Alex's legacy was with me through my first year of training, the ride, and still is today.” To register for WAM or to donate visit #WAM30
