Kelly Cordova of Redford and her wish-granting volunteer partner Jessica Hotham recently revealed a countdown calendar to wish kid Asia by creating a Mickey-shaped head that read, ‘”Days ‘til Disney,” and attached it to balloons. When she opened the box, the balloons popped out to display the countdown tag.
“This [enhancement] was my absolute favorite because you could watch the roller coaster of excitement,” Kelly said. “I’ll definitely be doing that more often.”
Kelly started volunteering with Make-A-Wish® Michigan two years ago after her friend, who was interning for the organization at the time, referred her to a training session. Since then, she has assisted with seven wishes, collected letters to Santa from Macy’s at Eastland Center mall as part of the Believe campaign and volunteered at Walk For Wishes® - Southeast Michigan.
“Kelly’s passion and dedication to our mission is infectious,” Volunteer Manager Ashley Hays said. “Her creativity shines through the wish enhancements she makes for her wish kids.”
Kelly, who is a marketing coordinator for an in-stadium restaurant in Detroit, recently held a Painting With a Twist fundraiser to raise money for Make-A-Wish Michigan. Kelly’s energy and excitement about the organization has been contagious resulting in one friend becoming a wish-granting volunteer and another person looking to participate in an upcoming training session.
“I love being a part of a small amount of happiness amongst the chaos that is their life-threatening battle,” Kelly said. “Kids have such a genuine sense of excitement that is absolutely contagious. Experiencing their wish or seeing pictures from their trip just proves that we’re doing something extraordinary for them.”
