Wish-granting volunteer Barb Moser surprised wish kid Mason during band class with a wish reveal that he was going to Boston where he would meet his favorite band – the Red Hot Chili Peppers – and see the band in concert. The joy on Mason’s face coupled with the excitement of his parents and classmates made it quite the memorable moment for Barb.
Barb first experienced Make-A-Wish Michigan when she attended Wish Ball – West Michigan after being invited by Dr. James Fahner, who serves as the chapter’s medical advisor and works with Barb’s husband.
“It touched me when I witnessed how important a wish is to a child and his/her family,” Barb explained. “So, I decided to make a wish-granting volunteer [in 2014].”
Since becoming a volunteer, Barb has helped to grant 23 wishes in West Michigan, as well as volunteer at events like Walk For Wishes® - West Michigan and the Wish-A-Mile® Bicycle Tour.
As a volunteer, Barb quickly learned that a send-off gathering at a pizza restaurant is quite popular. She frequently hosts gatherings at the same Grand Rapids pizza place to get wish kids and their families excited about their upcoming wish.
“My favorite experience is the look on the parents’ faces when they realize that their child’s wish is going to come true,” Barb said. “I always get more out of meeting and working with wish families than I would ever have dreamed. There is nothing like it!”
