Frequently Asked Questions

  • What Does Make-A-Wish® Michigan do? Make-A-Wish® Michigan grants the wishes of children with life-threatening medical conditions to enrich the human experience with hope, strength and joy. The 2013 Harris EquiTrend® annual poll of brand strength found that Make-A-Wish® is now considered the No. 2 health nonprofit in America.
  • How many wishes has Make-A-Wish® Michigan granted? Since 1984, Make-A-Wish Michigan has granted more than 7,000 wishes. This year, our goal is to reach more than 400 kids in our Michigan community - that’s a little more than one wish per day.
  • Why are wishes important? While doctors provide the medicine, Make-A-Wish Michigan supplies the magical experience that provides a positive and life-changing experience. In fact, a recent Make-A-Wish America survey found that 97 percent of parents said the wish experience strengthened their families.
  • Does my volunteering make a difference? There are more than 450 medically eligible Michigan children dreaming, planning and anticipating their wishes, but in order to fulfill them, Make-A-Wish Michigan needs more than 500 active wish-granting volunteers.
  • How much money does one wish cost? The average value of a Michigan wish is $8,000, and while each child’s wish is truly unique, the majority of wishes fall into one of four categories: I wish to go, I wish to meet, I wish to have or I wish to be. Nearly 80 percent of Michigan wishes require air travel, making it a critical – and costly – resource. In fact, we anticipate that more than 300 wishes will involve travel this year alone – that’s more than 98 million airlines miles.
  • How much of my donation goes right to granting wishes? Nearly 80 percent of each dollar spent directly benefits the Michigan wish-granting program.
  • How can a child receive a wish? An eligible wish child must be referred between the ages of 2 ½ and 18 and live in Michigan. The child’s medical condition must be confirmed in writing by his or her primary care physician, and the child cannot have received a previous wish from any other wish-granting organization.
  • How big is the Make-A-Wish? Make-A-Wish Michigan is one of more than 60 chapters of the national organization, Make-A-Wish America. Make-A-Wish also has 36 international affiliates. Nearly 250,000 wishes have been granted worldwide.
